An Introduction to the Basics of Counselling Course
This Introduction to the Basics of Counselling Course is a two-day course that teaches practical counselling concepts and skills, which include some simple but effective nurturing and healing approaches for use in helping others. These skills are very useful in life generally and they are especially valuable for those who wish to develop or enhance their basic counselling, coaching or nurturing skills with the aim of helping others using techniques or modalities such as the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
It is for those who have a desire to gain the skills or enhance their existing skills to be able to help others when they are emotional, stressed or suffering or who need some nurturing but who don't have a desire or need to spend a lot of money and time getting trained as a professional counsellor, coach or similar.
This course introduces and explores fundamental concepts and skills concerning counselling, coaching or facilitating another person (lay or professional) and how to use these basic skills (formally or informally over coffee) regardless of the particular technique being used. It is especially intended for use by those who will attend or have attended Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) workshops, where students can learn and develop or enhance their basic counselling concepts and skills that are needed to get better results in EFT sessions.
There is no other pre-requisite for this workshop than a desire to help and care for others.
This course can be done by anyone who wants to further develop their nurturing or emotional healing skills, especially anyone who is learning or has learnt the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and wants to use it with others but hasn't otherwise been trained as a counsellor or coach or similar. These foundational counselling skills will noticeably enhance the results obtainable when using EFT with others. However, having already learnt (or even heard of) EFT is not a pre-requisite.
This course will be held on a Saturday and Sunday (10 AM to 5 PM), which adds up to 12 hours of training. It will be held during 2012 but the exact dates have not yet been determined.
The aim of the course is to:
An added bonus is that attendees will get the opportunity to practice and do some personal work using some simple but powerful techniques on this course can also be easily self-applied.
The skills learnt on this course are also useful in relationships and especially in relationships that really matter, such as family, partners, children, friends, work mates, etc. Enhancing communications skills (and especially listening skills) and then taking them to a new level, are emphasized and thoroughly practiced throughout this course. Effective communication is the magic key that opens the door. It is very learnable. You'll be amazed.
The need for these skills lies in the fact that the most common source of frustration in relationships is that those concerned don't feel heard and understood. Added to that is the fact that resolving issues or upsets that occur in relationships (and they can and do occur in any relationship) requires the use of communication and it must be effective communication. The consequence of not resolving issues is that unresolved emotional issues tend to stack up (and may become emotional baggage that causes ongoing and recurring problems).
These are some of the comments from people who have done the Introduction to the Basics of Counselling Workshop (previously called the Counselling for Non-Counsellors Course):
"I gave up one of my passions to attend this workshop and … it was worth every minute of it." - Felicia Sandover. "The practical side was of the most benefit - putting concepts into practice". - E.C. "... a very supportive environment in which to interact and learn ... the demonstrations were very helpful …" - Margaret. “I have learned a great deal, all of it valuable. I feel much more confident in dealing with my issues with regards to helping others ..." - Janette Thornton. "The workshop introduced me to a wide variety of options to use in a counselling situation … Several of my new skills have already helped me in personal and professional situations." - Peggy Webb (Ayuveda practitioner). "I learnt the importance of active listening and how to help others resolve their emotional issues and personal problems even though I am not a professional counsellor." - D.A.B.

This "Introduction to the Basics of Counselling Workshop" evolved from an earlier but similar course called the "Counselling for Non-Counsellors Course" that Dr Donna Brandes, PhD and I developed and presented together for several years. Both of us drew from earlier workshops and trainings that we had developed independently prior to that. My repeated observation was that some of those who I taught the Emotional Freedom Technique to were enthusiastic about EFT but were limited by their lack of basic counselling skills. This course draws strongly on Donna's amazing communication and listening skills that she taught in the "Counselling for Non-Counsellors Course". Thank you, Donna!
This fundamental knowledge and these basic skills help to create an environment in which effective techniques can be used successfully (even if done informally and non-professionally) and within which the person who needs help feels safe enough to open up, communicate about and make some progress with issues that he/she wants to address.
These skills help to develop the confidence to help others, to establish rapport with the person you are working with, to gain and maintain his/her co-operation and participation, and to be able to stay on the topic being worked on (and not wander all over the place) to ensure that some results are achieved. Communication skills are, of course, extremely important and play a central role. Many people have already developed some of these skills but enhancing or complementing them can make a big difference.
In my Essential Relationship Skills Course, one of the nine primary relationship skills needed to maintain, enhance and heal relationships is Nurturing Skills. This Introduction to the Basics of Counselling Course workshop introduces and teaches "Practical Nurturing Skills" which includes an introduction to EFT (if not already introduced), but EFT is only one of the three simple techniques to be learnt (which can be used separately or blended together as needed).

PLEASE NOTE: This course is not a substitute for professional training in counselling or coaching and does not result any diploma or certificate or other qualification. It is educational and includes practicing using these simple methods. It is hoped that this workshop will inspire people to do professional training in counselling or coaching or similar.
